Making the most of Linkedin - Part 1

Linkedin Day here at BinB … let’s keep a diary of activity and then qualify what happened later … best give this project a title …

Making the most of Linkedin

Logged in to my account and top of the tree of status updates was Graham Jones, Internet Psychologist.

He’d added an article How to Optimize your Website for Local Search by Debbie Everson.
http://www.grahamjones.co.uk/internet-business-advice/search-engine-marketing/how-to-optimize-your-website-for-local-search.html

Graham is a smart cookie. He knows how time consuming it can be to write copy and so invites people to send him quality articles and he’ll use them on his site. On checking Graham’s site for pages indexed by Google we find 4,270 !

You can find out how many pages someone has indexed by prefixing the url with site: and doing this search on Google or Yahoo … Bing is not so keen, or at least wasn’t.

Graham has over 500 connections on Linkedin and 3721 followers on Twitter.

Next up on the status updates is a chap I met on Ecademy, not that I visit there very often these days, too much like one of those nightclubs where you have to be part of the in crowd to be allowed to talk!!

Mehmet Yildiz is a brilliant communicator and Executive IT Architect at IBM which don’t usually go together or I guess architect, explaining what they need from the techies does.

Again he has over 500 Linkedin followers and 5731 Twitter followers. He’s based in Australia and is brilliant at asking questions of others and getting them to feedback. He does tend to respond to every thread but not in you patronising life coach way, he has a high intellect and so is specific to each. I can only put the level of energy and commitment he puts into social media down to the fact that he has a job covering the mortgage and has probably been allowed by IBM to spend half his day on forums for research purposes … either that or he doesn’t need sleep!

This current link is one of those @blar, @blar, ones which tend not to grab my attention as they are full of noise pollution … we’ll not have to wait long for a quality one thought and I may then take a look …

Dave Clark is third on the list of status updates with an article entitled Applying the 7 habits to your business networking
http://www.nrg-networks.com/nrg-7-habits-business-networking.html

A logical story for him to post as he’s in the business networking space … Dave has 2477 Twitter followers and over 500 Linkedin cronies.

84 people have recommended Dave so he has massive credibility … I need to work on my testimonials and I guess the best way to do that is to write them for others and they feel obliged to reciprocate, let’s try that later.

We've done some work with Dave, go google business networking lunches and a space we created to help promote NRG lunches flies into position …

Looking down the list, an area which I am getting more involved in is the Answers section of Linkedin. Andy Hamer has just answered 17 questions … he must have been up early !!!

The idea is people ask question on a bunch of topics … you search for questions that you can answer … the individual who posted the question then, a week later, chooses the best answer to win a Gold star … which is in fact green!! This demonstrates your expertise and enables people to identify that you know what you are talking about. Andy has been given 3 stars for …

Expertise in
• Property Law (1 best answer)
• Business Development (1 best answer)
• Career Management (1 best answer)

Let’s go back and see what the other chaps have got..

Graham Jones
Expertise in
• Internet Marketing (5 best answers)
• Blogging (5 best answers)
• Advertising (1 best answer)

Mehmet Yildiz
Expertise in
• Personnel Policies (1 best answer)
• Organizational Development (1 best answer)

Dave Clarke
No stars … come here boy and sit at the front of the class !!

Each and every one of us uses different tools in different ways … Dave is probably more connected than most by the sheer nature that he runs a business networking organisation but yet he has obviously not started using the Answers area to demonstrate his expertise … that or he just talks crap !!

Hang on, I haven’t got any gold stars yet … but it is only a matter of time because I have, since this week, started actively engaging in that space and so I am bound to get at least 1 star soon … even if it is because I provide the only answer to someone’s question!!

Writing this I can see it is going to make sense to post multiple posts during the day so that we can max the SEO impact of these articles and help more people bump into us!!

End part 1 of Making the most of Linkedin, got a call in 10 minutes and need a fresh cup of char !!
