If social media should be part of your online marketing mix, in car terms it’s like 4th gear!
You can’t really spend time on social media unless you have a main site you want to drive people to, so your WEBSITE is your 1ST GEAR You can publish the domain on advertising materials and encourage people to look at www.jondavey.co.uk for more information on your fab product, service, offer, educational materials, etc. Let’s keep things simple and call whatever it is you are looking to promote through your website & social media activity STUFF! 2ND GEAR is your EMAIL MARKETING It makes total sense to email people who have shown an interest in your stuff updates on what’s going on in your world. These don’t have to be regular, as that requires planning and resources and you may find over time that people just glide over to the next thing in their in box. If random then they may give it more importance … note to self, try this with two mailers and see what reaction each gets over time. The point is if the header grabs the attention of the potential reader, they open and click through for more then they are interested today… but what are you doing with that lead? 3RD GEAR is your TELEMARKETING follow up Sending out emails is great and helps remind people you exist but most recipients will probably just look at the title. If a recipient opens up your email and clicks through on a link, then following up with a phone call shows you have your finger on the pulse. SOCIAL MEDIA is your 4TH GEAR With everything rolling along nicely you can engage 4TH GEAR and start actively communicating in real time with people. Post blogs and comments on the relevant social communities, feed out with RSS to let others share your content, saving them time and you never know, they might drive a few folk in your direction. Use the social networks that fit your needs and also seriously consider becoming a community leader or the sponsor of a community that could drive traffic around your virtual neighbourhood. Once you have this right you should then be changing up to 5TH GEAR and watching the sales roll in!
