On Friday afternoon Ian Hendry and I were recording our Twitter Show for Radio Bracknell which is broadcast on Sunday mornings ... it's OK if that's just SO the wrong time of the week for you, we'll be locking and loading the show on our various websites to max the distribution ... since that is all part of getting our message to the many !!
Ian mentioned there is currently a major problem with Twitter accounts being hijacked by spammers looking to destroy the medium ... or sell a solution to us just in time for Christmas! Let's coin a new phrase Twitterjacked (probably used by a bunch of folk before ... let me check ... just 2 ... mashable back in June and another site, give me back my credit .com in May, they were talking about celebs being hijacked ... different twist). Serious point - if you get a message that looks like spam then it probably is and DON'T CLICK ON IT ... it only takes 1 click for your account to be Twitterjacked And once your account is Twitterjacked then it will start duplicating the spam messages to all your fans ... and then if they click, to their followers ... and so by Tuesday the whole world is Twitterjacked. Today I received 2 tweets from FSBThamesValley , an organisation that on a national level is the largest representing small businesses in the UK. The region set up their own Twitter account and luckily it doesn't have too many followers or this could be a huge problem. They will have to set up a new account to ensure clean distribution. I have let them know on a regional and national level so they can take the appropriate action. You have to be so careful when getting all excited about a new media like Twitter. You may have traditional systems that work nicely ... you hear about something that could make you more efficient and save a bundle of cash ... but all that glitters is not gold !! Handle anything new with kid gloves, experiment over months, not weeks and introduce it slowly and organically with a back up plan should it all go pear shaped. On a Jon Davey is great note ... I have been involved with the FSB for the last 10 years locally and was chair for 5. Our branch was recently acknowledged as the best new business generating branch in the one of the best regions in the UK. I like to think that our BinB newsletters have had a significant impact on this, driving potential members to networking events where the committee have directed them to recruiters.
