Twitter experiment with followers
You need to run experimental campaigns with online tools to establish their value and so here goes, our Twitter experiment with followers.
When I first logged in to Twitter I struggled as I viewed it as a pure noise. I have since been shown the value proposition by some hardened users and it makes sense to keep the faith and try different approaches. I’m not a celebrity so no-one really cares what I have for breakfast. I’m not British Rail so don’t need to let people know if a train is on time... I am a small business looking to connecting with those who may be interested in what I have to offer so how do I make Twitter work best for me???? People had said that the etiquette on Twitter is to follow those that follow you. Initially I was picky and then I went, sod it, let’s just follow everyone who wants to follow me and see where we end up. The other day I had 394 Twitter followers and had just opted to follow all the “Twitter favourites” a list of 200+ celebs and experts Twitter had chosen that you could follow with just one click, so was following 524. I had noticed that many I followed who followed me had almost immediately opted out and so left me feeling wanting... following more than are following you makes it all very sad... I could see my kids using their fingers to put an “L” on their forehead!!! Then I spotted one company were following 3 people but had 3000 following them, or similar numbers, and thought let’s try an experiment... I will chop my list down to lucky 13 and see what the net effect is... does that increase my base or does everyone leave as I am no longer following their posts? I took this initial action on the evening of 1st September 2009 and by the following morning my followers had shrank from 394 to 311. I chose not to tweet all day on the 2nd to see what the natural wastage was from the UK by my unsubscribing. The morning of the 3rd and we are down to 297... we have lost 25% of our followers due to the act of not following... and that is of those who are aware we have stopped. Today, 3rd, I will send out 3 tweets relating to this article which will allow existing followers to click through and become aware that I am no longer following them... will more delete? As we move forward I will be far more thoughtful about the nature of the articles I post, will more start to follow, especially since this article is entitled Twitter experiment with followers... only time will tell! (I’ll keep adding to this article until it’s past its sell by date, so probably 48 hours, like the bread we buy today!! I remember...) It's the morning of the 5th and yesterday we went on an amazing campaign, pushing out a bunch of stories via Twitter... I did notice 1 new person join but the net effect was a total of 266 followees... a drop of another 10% The articles we pushed out yesterday, at least 3 of the 5, would have been of interest to TRUE followers... there was zero sign of click through from Twitter... the reality is no one is listening... they may have the joined my gang but they only did it for me to join them is the logical conclusion. For Twitter to work you need to be talking about Twitter and Twitter training courses! Or you need to be a celebrity or a snow leopard. Worth putting a little energy as your next story may grab the attention of the perfect cleint... you got to keep hoping!! And the Twitter feed provides an excellent RSS feed aggregator for my website, so I'll keep using it... but don't spend too much time on it... go pick up the phone and call a real business person in a real office who has real money to spend. |
